 Arise Kidney Foundation was incorporated in Dallas, Texas in 2023, however, out history goes deeper. Members of our team, collectively over 40 years working with dialysis patients. 

• Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a worldwide public health threat. Globally, it has been estimated that more than 500 million individuals have CKD, defined by either kidney damage or glomerular filtration rate (GFR) < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 for greater or equal to 3 months, regardless of the cause.  End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is the last stage of CKD, which is when dialysis is needed to maintain patient’s lives. At this stage, kidneys are no longer able to support the needs of the body. Hemodialysis is indicated at this stage of the disease and it is a treatment that replaces some of the functions performed by healthy kidneys. Kidney disease poses disproportionate human suffering and a dire economic burden in African where less than 2% of the patients with ESRD can afford the weekly cost of dialysis, essentially making ESRD a death sentence for most patients from these developing nations. 

Cost of Dialysis in Nigeria 

• The cost of dialysis in Nigeria can be assessed from financial and human cost aspect. On the average, Hemodialysis sessions in Nigeria typically costs between N40,000 ($40) – N50,000 ($50) per session which translates to anything between N120,000 ($120) – N150,000 ($150) per week and an average of N480,000 ($480) – N600,000 ($600) per month. For emphasis, the federally mandated minimum wage in Nigeria is N30,000(or $30) monthly. Also, Unlike in United States of America where all dialysis patients are Medicaid-B eligible, or UK, Canada, Australia with universal health coverage and in extension other developed nations, dialysis is not universally covered in Nigeria few citizens have health insurance. Hence dialysis patients in Nigeria and other sub-Saharan countries are at the mercy of family members and this can lead to crippling financial burdens on both individuals and their families. These financial obstacles coupled with other co-morbidities that typically accompany the diagnosis of ESRD imposes a very heavy mortality rate on dialysis patients in this region of the world.A study conducted by Halle, M.P., Ashuntantang, G., Kaze, F.F. et al. on fatal outcomes among patients on maintenance haemodialysis in sub-Saharan Africa found that over the course of 19 years, a referral hospital in the southeast of Nigeria took care of 760 people with ESRD, 565 of whom were on dialysis. Eighty-seven percent of these patients died in the first month of treatment, and only six percent of those on hemodialysis were still living after three months. These are statistics with real-life impacts on peoples life in this region of the world.

Where we come in.

• Arise Kidney Foundation aims to present selected ESRD patients in Nigeria and surrounding countries a lifeline by subsidizing each dialysis sessions thus preventing ESRD diagnosis from essentially becoming a death sentence for these patients. These are to be achieved by collaborating with Local and/or international organizations, groups, well-meaning individuals and you in coordination with carefully vetted and chosen Local dialysis centers in our regions of operation, being piloted in Nigeria and subsequently in other Sub-Saharan West African regions in subsidizing the financial costs of hemodialysis sessions for ESRD Patients.We will liase with renowned international dialysis companies and pharmaceuticals to procure discounted medications and supplies needed for dialysis to be dispensed to patients under our program during their dialysis sessions and provide access to nutritionists in order to ensure patients are adhering to renal diet regimen and we will also hold periodic educational symposium to educate our patients and potential patient populations on healthful livings and enlighten them about our ranges of activities.
